Why Dental, Immunity & Gut Health Matter for Dogs

Why D.I.G?

We created the D.I.G framework as an easy-to-remember acronym that highlights three important areas of pet wellness: Dental health, Immunity, and Gut health.

The D.I.G. framework is a fun, memorable play on the word “dig”, because great health starts from the inside out. Just like dogs naturally dig to explore, uncover, and understand their world, we believe pet owners should be encouraged to dig deeper into what truly supports their pet’s health.

D.I.G  is built around three core pillars of health:

Dental
Supporting oral health is essential for your pet’s overall wellbeing. A healthy mouth helps reduce harmful bacteria, supports the breakdown and removal of plaque and tartar, and contributes to fresher breath, stronger teeth, and better long-term health.

Plaque naturally forms on teeth throughout the day, and if it is not disrupted, it can harden into tartar. Once tartar builds up, it becomes much more difficult to remove and can contribute to gum irritation, bad breath, and more serious dental disease. Supporting the mouth daily helps slow this process and encourages a cleaner oral environment.

Dental health is especially important because bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and place strain on the heart, liver, and kidneys over time. This is why maintaining a clean, balanced oral environment is a key part of whole-body wellness.

Bladderwrack plays a valuable supportive role in oral health.  This natural seaweed contains bioactive compounds, including fucoidan and naturally occurring iodine. These may help create an environment less favourable to harmful bacteria, supporting plaque control and overall mouth health as part of a daily routine.

Immunity
A strong immune system is not about overstimulation, but about balance, regulation, and appropriate response. In healthy pets, the immune system is constantly working in the background to identify and respond to everyday challenges such as environmental microbes, dietary changes, allergens, and physical stressors.

Immune function relies heavily on communication between cells, the gut, and inflammatory pathways. When this system is well supported, it can respond quickly and effectively when needed, while also recognising when to stand down to prevent unnecessary or chronic inflammation.

Key nutrients such as antioxidants, omega fatty acids, vitamins, and trace minerals all play a role in supporting this immune balance. Antioxidants help protect cells from oxidative stress, which can otherwise weaken immune efficiency over time. Meanwhile, a well-regulated inflammatory response is essential — inflammation is a natural part of immune defence, but when it becomes excessive or prolonged, it can place strain on the body and reduce resilience.

A large proportion of the immune system is also located in the gut, meaning digestive health and immune health are closely connected. A diverse and well-supported microbiome helps train and regulate immune responses, ensuring the body can distinguish between harmless and harmful triggers more effectively.

Bladderwrack may also contribute to immune support through its naturally occurring bioactive compounds, including fucoidan, which has been studied for its role in supporting immune modulation and healthy inflammatory responses. By helping to maintain microbial balance and supporting gut integrity, it indirectly supports the body’s natural immune defences.

Gut
Gut health is the foundation of overall wellness in pets. The digestive system is responsible not only for breaking down food, but for absorbing nutrients, producing key metabolites, and communicating constantly with the immune and nervous systems.

A healthy gut lining acts as a selective barrier, allowing nutrients to pass through while helping keep unwanted substances out. When this barrier is well supported, it contributes to better digestion, more stable energy levels, and improved overall resilience.

Equally important is the gut microbiome — the diverse community of beneficial bacteria that live in the digestive tract. These microbes help ferment fibres, produce beneficial compounds such as short-chain fatty acids, and play a key role in maintaining digestive balance. A diverse microbiome is associated with better digestion, improved stool quality, and more stable immune function.

Bladderwrack contains naturally occurring bioactive compounds such as fucoidan, along with prebiotic polysaccharides, which help nourish beneficial gut bacteria and support a healthy digestive environment. By supporting microbial diversity and gut lining integrity, it contributes to a more balanced internal ecosystem.

Together, D.I.G reflects our belief that lasting pet health starts from within.
